What is Flag?

Flag is an idea social media like Facebook/WhatsApp/Twitter. An intelligent content filtration through which, ‘Request for aid materials’ or ‘Availability of aid materials’ are populated with Zip Code categorization. This helps the user to find their desperate need for aid and availability during any emergency. This will also help by avoiding memes, which spams the search results with less priority posts.

Background of this idea:

When Chennai was flooded during monsoon in 2015, Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp played a very major role in connecting Volunteers/Donors and flood victims. Few volunteers used google docs to update information on help/aid availability places. Majority of volunteers/donors were formed in to groups and connect with similar groups from neighboring areas to find ‘victims/representatives in more affected regions’.

Existing Problem:

#Tag helped to spread/broadcast places where more volunteering is needed, as well as to search the most affected places. Along with the required information, meme was also populating as search result which resulted in higher time to identify the required information.

Problem Statment:

  • " Zip Code based intelligent content filtration as an alternate idea for #Tag which populates meme and junk information as search results during emergency"

Based on the user needs, they could be classified in to 3 major groups as mentioned below.

Volunteer

Jayalakshmi

'I am looking for volunteers/representatives who could collect the aid materials from me to distribute in more affected regions'

Demographic

  • Occupation: Software Engineer
  • Status: Single
  • Residential Area: Georg Town
  • Archetype: Organizer

Bio

  • Jaya is friendly and socially engaging person. She volunteers to many government schools and old age homes on weekly basis along with her office with Corporate Social Responsibility team. Also, she is donating money and food for few Non-governmental organization on a regular basis.
  • She searches for volunteers and places where more aid materials needed. She is frustrated by irrelevant Facebook search results and spam forwards in WatsApp groups. She expects the search result to be more relevant or an alternate way to #Tag search.

Goals

  • To spend less time in searching volunteers and volunteering groups
  • To identify place where more aid materials and volunteering is required

Motivation

  • Want to help victim to her maximum by providing aid materials
  • Want to connect with likeminded people to offer a maximum volunteering and donations
  • To host team meetings and status calls

Frustration

  • Piled up with memes as Facebook search results
  • WhatsApp group are spammed with same forwards and messages without timestamp

Victim

Kavitha

'I am staying in rescue center, as my house is flooded. I am looking for milk for my kid and aid materials for my family'

Demographic

  • Archetype: Single Parent

Bio

  • Kavitha is a single parent and she heading her family. In-spite of her poor family situation, she manages her family by driving auto rickshaw.
  • She looks for milk for her kid. She gets frustrated when, the food bank ran out of stock.

Goals

  • To search for milk and aid materials for her kid and family.

Motivation

  • Want to take care of her family

  • Warehouse is left with no stock of aid material

Representative

Shiva

'I am looking for donor from whom I could collect the aid material to distribute to my street or neighbor'

Demographic

  • Age: 30
  • Occupation: DTP Operator
  • Status: Single
  • Residential Area: Thiruvotriyur
  • Archetype: Social Worker

Bio

  • Shiva is social worker interested in volunteering. He has a very good leadership. He always come forward to help his street people whenever there is any problem.
  • He searches for donors who could offer any aid materials, so that he could collect it and distribute it to his street which is affected badly because of flood. He gets frustrated when he could not get any aid materials for his neighbors/street.

Goals

  • To call mobile numbers, to ask for any help or aid materials to distribute to his flooded street.

Motivation

  • Want to help his neighbors and street who are badly affected by flood

Frustration

  • Messages or post are not timestamped. By the time he calls, the aid materials ran out of stock
